Chancellor Olaf Scholz has overseen the weakest economic performance of any post-war German leader. Under his leadership, the economy has stagnated— even Gerhard Schröder achieved 1.9% growth during his second term from 2002 to 2005.
"Public" sector employment remains the lifeline of the German labour market offsetting the drag from industry on employment.
Econ crisis is now impacting labor market. In Jan, number of unemployed increased by 186k MoM, at least it remained just below 3mln. Unemployment rate jumped by 0.4ppts to 6.4%. Even after seasonal adjustments, unemployment rose by 11k, pushing adj jobless rate to 6.2%.
In 2024, U.S. goods trade with Germany held steady at $236 billion. U.S. exports declined by 1.4% to $76 billion, while imports inched up 0.7% to $160 billion, widening the trade deficit by 2.7% to $85 billion.
